Create a product

Written by Binod Paul

The product overview shows all the products available for your company and corresponding business unit (if applicable). In addition, you can use the search box above the overview to find a specific product. You can also filter based on production locations/factories.

To create a new product, click on the + Add Product button, you can either use the bulk upload option or add them manually one by one.

If you choose to do it manually, click on the Add manually button. A window with different fields will open up. Simply fill it out the required information and with one click on the Save button your product will be created.

  • To learn more on how to bulk upload your products continue with the bulk uploads guide.
  • Make sure your Company Admin has added your Product Identifier Types in the Configure settings. This step is vital for adding your products successfully.

What is a Product Identifier Type?

A product identifier type is a classification or category that helps to uniquely identify a product. It is a specific attribute or characteristic used to distinguish one product from another. Some examples for product identifier types: Material ID, Universal Product Codes (UPC), International Standard Book Numbers (ISBN), Global Trade Item Numbers (GTIN), Stock Keeping Unit (SKU Code), Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS Code).

These identifiers play a crucial role in managing the different products in an organization.

Why do you get an error while adding a Product or when you want to link a Product in your Product Tasks?

As you have just signed up, there is no data on Mattermaps yet. It needs to be fed with data in order to start sharing /requesting PCF.

Steps to take to answer the PCF request coming in from your customer:

1. Open the Product Task (the request received from your customer).

2. Review the Request Overview tab. Try to understand what is requested, in which format, from which location etc.

3. Click Proceed to Share PCF. You will see the below screen /error:

This means, in order to share the PCF, first you need to create a product.

4. Click Add Product, once clicked you will see the below page:

5. This means you need to first add the product identifier type in order to create your first product.

6. Click Add Product Identifier. You will be directed to Company Configuration page to add a Product Identifier Type.

7. Click Add Identifier and type in the product identifier type or types. You can add multiple identifier types and you can make those additional identifier types mandatory as well if needed.

Basic information about your company can be created and changed easily via the Configuration section by the Company Admin.

To customize your company data, click on the gear icon at the top bar and then open the Company Configuration settings. Here you find on the left side panel all your Configure settings:

Choose the option you would like to explore from the options below:

To exit the Company Configuration, from the top bar, click Go to module, then select PCF Exchange.

Setting up your company account in Mattermaps is one of the first steps you will need to take to seamlessly exchange PCF information with your supply chain.

We have consolidated the data import into one view to make this more intuitive. Now you will be able to do this in bulk, from the same view for the following data:

  • Upload and edit suppliers
  • Upload and edit components
  • Map components to suppliers and edit that mapping
  • Upload and edit secondary data
  • Upload and edit products

This change is possible thanks to the introduction of UUIDs (Universally Unique Identifiers) for most of the objects in Mattermaps, from now on you will have a UUID which is generated automatically by the system. You need to reference the UUID only when editing your information.

The introduction of UUIDs will enable you and your company to mass edit the data related to suppliers, components, link between component-supplier, secondary data and products.

See below to better understand how to bring in this data and use the new templates.

When using the bulk upload functionality, you might receive an error when uploading files. You can download an error report. Below is a table explaining the reasoning behind every error:
Error Status Reason

Scan failed or file processing failed Failed due to an issue that happened while processing the files.
Timeout Scanning did not complete in 40 seconds.

All created products appear in the product overview for each product family. A quick overview shows us product identifier, product name, factories, total production stage and declared units. You can manage the columns you view in this table by clicking on the gear icon on the right, and customizing your desired view.

To edit or delete a product, click on the three-dots on the right side of a product, you can edit the product data by clicking Edit Product or delete the entire product by clicking Delete Product. You also have the option to view all the task related to this particular product.

You can also edit your product from a different view, by opening up your desired product, and clicking on the three dots at the top right corner.

This can also be done in bulk.

When clicking on the product, we can see the product overview. Here we get a better understanding of what this product's carbon footprint looks like. We can see the created PCFs, history of emissions of this specific product.

You can also store a bill of material for each of your products and add own manufacturing emissions.

Do not forget that the overview box will be empty in the beginning. To be able to see the data in the overview, a PCF needs to be created. After that all the data about your PCF data will be shown in the overview.
