Update an existing BOM and how to access its version history

Introduction

Updating a Bill of Materials (BOM) is necessary when the underlying data has changed and you need Makersite to update its calculations related to your product based on the new BOM version. Since you have previously imported a BOM, Makersite has already created Product Groups based on the Name column in the BOM, as well as other data objects.
โ€‹
Updating a BOM means simply re-uploading the BOM with newer data, and it can result in four scenarios with a different impact on Product Groups and source file versioning in Makersite:

  • Re-uploading a BOM with the same file name and the same data in Name column in the BOM

  • Re-uploading a BOM with the same file name but a different Name column in the BOM

  • Re-uploading a BOM with a different file name but the same data in Name column in the BOM

  • Re-uploading a BOM with a different file name and different data in Name column in the BOM

Update Results

The table below shows what happens to Makersite Product Groups in every BOM re-upload scenario.

BOM Excel file name

Name column in BOM

Result in Makersite

Same as before

Same as before

Updates data in existing Product Group recognized by BOM Name. Does not change Source in Makersite, version history is updated for the same source file.

Same as before

Different

Changes Product Group name in Makersite and then updates the data (no fields are duplicated). Does not change Source in Makersite, version history is updated for the same source file.

Different

Same as before

Adds new BOM file to Product Group sources. Merges the content of both files and updates Product Group data in Makersite accordingly.

This is the recommended scenario due to the version tracking for both source files which is available as a result.

Different

Different

Creates new Product Group based on the new Name from the BOM and attaches the new BOM file as the Source in Makersite.

You can manage your BOM files, by navigating to the Product Datasheet page of the Product Group and selecting Compose at the top of the page. Under the Attachments section there will be a list of all files associated with the Product Group.
